Barbie L'Hoste is a native of New Orleans who began her career at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. After completing her foundation year at the Maryland Institute College of Art she returned to the great city of New Orleans where she studied at Loyola and finished with a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of New Orleans. Recently, she has finished up her masters degree in studio fine arts from Tulane University and continues to work on two bodies of work: high fire glazes on porcelain with collage, and mixed media with acrylic paint on canvas. Barbie’s proclivity in painting is to borrow surrounding images or materials and reinterpret their original intentions through appropriation. The ceramic work enters the conversation of painting by investigating color, collaged pop culture imagery, and texture presented congruently in a two dimensional form. She draws inspiration from our culture’s thirst for nostalgia, especially in regard to craft. As an artist who has been affected by disaster, Barbie responds to society’s extreme materialism and subsequent desensitization of the human condition.
